First-party rating plugin vs collected user reviews (WP Review Pro vs a UGC tool)

First-party rating plugin vs collected user reviews (WP Review Pro vs a UGC tool)

Where does the star rating on your page come from? It changes what schema you can honestly use.

Editor rating plugin (WP Review Pro, etc.)
Pros
— You set the score; instant pros/cons + rating box
— Clean, controlled, fast to publish
Cons
— It's your opinion — Google restricts self-serving Review rich results
— No social proof; readers know it's one person's number

Collected user reviews (UGC widget)
Pros
— Aggregated real-user ratings = legitimate AggregateRating eligibility
— Fresh UGC keeps the page updating, builds trust
Cons
— Cold-start problem — empty until you have an audience
— Moderation burden; spam and fake reviews

For: Editor ratings for a new site with a clear expert voice. UGC collection once you have traffic that'll actually leave reviews.

Gotcha nobody mentions: Marking your own editor score as Review schema to chase stars can trip a self-serving-review penalty. Aggregate user data is the only star source Google reliably honors now.

Bottom line: Early-stage expert site, editor rating (no star schema). Audience-stage, collect real UGC for legit stars.
