Case #029: The drag-and-drop lander that cost me 9% a click

Case #029: The drag-and-drop lander that cost me 9% a click

A finance offer, $2,500 to test, and the eternal question: a $99/mo Unbounce drag-and-drop lander or a hand-coded static HTML page on my own CDN.

Unbounce, week one: $1,250 spent, 3.9% landing conversion, $1,510 back. Built it in two hours. Beautiful. But the page weighed 1.9MB with Unbounce's script bloat and loaded in 3.4s on mobile 4G.

Custom static lander: $1,250 spent, 5.1% landing conversion, $1,720 back. It took me a day to code, weighed 180KB, loaded in 0.9s. That 2.5-second speed gap was the whole story — I had GA timing pinned to it. Every extra second of load on mobile finance traffic bled roughly 7% of conversions.

The tradeoff is speed-of-shipping versus speed-of-page. Unbounce let me launch and A/B-test the same afternoon with zero code. The custom page won on raw performance but couldn't be edited without me reopening an editor.

The smart move I landed on: Unbounce to find the winning copy and layout fast, then hand-code that exact winner for production. Test cheap and disposable, ship lean and permanent.

Final numbers: custom lander returned 14% more on identical traffic, almost all of it from load speed on mobile.

The lesson: page builders are for discovering what converts, raw HTML is for serving it at scale — confuse the two and you pay the tax on every single click.
