RSS/Atom Feed vs XML Sitemap For Fresh Content: Use Both Lanes

RSS/Atom Feed vs XML Sitemap For Fresh Content: Use Both Lanes

Google accepts RSS/Atom as a sitemap format. It's not a replacement — it's a fast lane.

XML sitemap = the full index:
— Every indexable URL, old and new. The complete map.

RSS/Atom feed = the fresh lane:
— Only your most recent ~20-50 URLs. Crawlers poll feeds more aggressively, so new posts get discovered faster.

The winning setup:
— Submit BOTH in GSC and list both in robots.txt. Full XML for completeness, RSS for speed-to-discovery on new content.

When RSS alone fails:
— It only carries recent items, so older URLs vanish from it. Relying on RSS only = old pages never re-declared.

Pass/fail:
— ✅ XML sitemap covers 100% of indexable URLs.
— ✅ RSS carries newest items with accurate pubDate.

Definition of done: full coverage via XML, fast discovery via RSS, both submitted.
