Image-link alt text vs. text anchors: an underweighted distribution input

Image-link alt text vs. text anchors: an underweighted distribution input

When a link is an image rather than text, Google uses the image's alt attribute as the anchor. This creates a category most anchor audits handle poorly, and it has tactical implications for distribution.

Image links are common in natural profiles — logos, badges, screenshots. Their alt-text anchors tend to be descriptive or branded ("Acme logo") rather than exact-match keyword. This means a profile with many image links naturally accrues a layer of low-risk, branded-flavored anchors.

The tactic question: do image-link anchors count toward your exact-match ratio the same way text anchors do? Evidence suggests they are treated as anchors but, empirically, manipulators favor text anchors, so image-link anchors skew the population toward natural.

On one hand, image links are a legitimately natural dilution source — badge and logo links read as organic citation. On the other, most third-party crawlers report image-alt anchors inconsistently, so your audit may be undercounting or miscategorizing them.

Limitation: I have not seen a study isolating whether image-link anchors carry identical weight to equivalent text anchors. They may be discounted.

My practice: audit image-link alt text separately, and check whether your tool folds them into the text-anchor cloud or omits them.

Open question: are image-alt anchors weighted equally to text anchors, or partially discounted?
