Q: Clawbacks or upfront payment holds to handle refunds?

Q: Clawbacks or upfront payment holds to handle refunds?

Both manage the same risk — paying commission on a sale that later reverses — but they feel very different to partners.

— A payment hold (delay payout until the refund window closes) is cleaner. Money the affiliate never received can't feel 'taken back.' Best when your refund window is short and predictable, like 14-30 days.
— A clawback (pay now, deduct later) keeps partners happier short-term but breeds disputes, especially if you net it against future earnings months later. Best when refunds are rare and you want fast pay as a recruiting edge.

For most programs, a hold matching your refund window beats clawbacks. You avoid the single worst partner experience: a surprise negative balance.

Caveat: whichever you use, show the pending/locked/reversed status in the partner dashboard. Silent deductions destroy trust faster than slow payments ever will.
