Pillar-cluster vs a flat pile of posts

Pillar-cluster vs a flat pile of posts

Month 1: My sleep-product site was 60 posts with zero structure — just a chronological blog feed. Each post an island. I internal-linked randomly when I remembered to.

Month 4: Rankings were mediocre everywhere. Nothing broke top 5. I read about topic clusters and rolled my eyes — sounded like consultant fluff.

The turn: I tried it on ONE topic. Built a "mattress buying guide" pillar, then linked 9 supporting posts up to it and to each other with descriptive anchors. Left the rest of the site flat as a control.

Month 7: the clustered topic's pillar went from position 14 to 4. The supporting posts rose too — link equity flowed both ways. The flat control group? Flat. Traffic on clustered URLs roughly tripled, control unchanged.

Month 9: I'd reorganized everything into 6 clusters. Site traffic 12k → 31k.

The takeaway: a flat pile wastes the authority your posts could pass each other. Clusters aren't fluff — they're internal link equity routed on purpose. Test it on one topic before you believe me, like I did.
