A hook is a promise, and the bill comes due
Hooks get treated as attention tricks. They are contracts. You state what the viewer will get, and the rest of the piece either pays or it does not.
Overpromising works exactly once per person. The second time your name appears, they remember being sold nothing.
The practical version:
— Write the payoff first. Then write a hook that describes it honestly and makes it sound as interesting as it actually is.
— If the honest hook is boring, the content is boring. That is useful information. Fix the content.
— Avoid hooks that work only by withholding. "You will never guess" makes an enemy of anyone who has been fooled before.
— Specific beats dramatic. One concrete detail is more arresting than any adjective.
— Check the last line against the first. If they do not match, one of them is lying.
Curiosity earns the view. Delivery earns the next one.
