Playbook: QA a Deferred Deep Link Flow So Installs Land Where You Promised
Broken deferred deep links silently tank conversion. Test the full matrix:
— New install + cold start: ad creative → store → first open → correct in-app screen
— Test on a fresh device or wiped simulator, never on a device with the app cached
— Verify the deferred payload survives the store round-trip (clipboard/fingerprint method varies by MMP)
— Re-run on iOS and Android separately — Universal Links and App Links fail differently
— Test the 'already installed' path — it should route via direct deep link, not deferred
— Confirm fallback: if the link breaks, does the user land on home or a dead screen?
— Log the resolved route in your MMP to confirm attribution still fires
✓ Catches the silent revenue leak between click and onboarding
✓ Forces testing of the install-vs-reopen branch most teams skip
✗ Fingerprint-based deferral degrades under iOS privacy limits
✗ Manual matrix is tedious; easy to skip an OS combo
Verdict: Use this matrix before every campaign with a non-home destination; skip deferred entirely if your value is on the home screen.
Best for: Growth teams running creative that promises a specific in-app destination.
