Programmatic pages vs handwritten: where the line actually is
Month 1: Built a "distance between cities" calculator site. 12,000 programmatic pages from a database, live in a weekend. I thought I'd cracked SEO.
Month 3: Google indexed 11,000 of them. Month 4: indexed dropped to 2,300. The March-ish core update treated the thin ones as doorway pages. Traffic 9,000 → 1,400 in eleven days. Gut-punch.
The diagnosis: pages that were ONLY a number and a map got crushed. Pages where I'd programmatically pulled in real transit options, a forum quote, and a photo survived fine.
Month 7: I pruned to 1,800 "enriched" templates, each with at least three genuine data points beyond the headline fact. Traffic recovered to 7,400 — fewer pages, more durable.
The takeaway: programmatic isn't the problem, thin programmatic is. The dividing line is whether each generated page answers something a handwritten page would. If the only unique element is a variable swap, Google's update math eventually finds it. Enrich at scale or don't scale.
