Playbook: track which SERP features you're losing (and to whom)
I set this up on a real account in Semrush and Ahrefs. Position alone hides that you 'rank #1' but a featured snippet above you eats the click.
The setup:
— In your rank tracker, enable SERP-feature columns: snippet, PAA, AI Overview, image pack, sitelinks.
— Filter to keywords where YOU rank top 5 but DON'T own the feature. That's your steal list.
— For snippet targets, check the current format (paragraph/list/table) — match it exactly to win.
— Re-check weekly: feature ownership flips fast, position lags it.
— Cross-reference with GSC CTR — a feature you lost shows up as CTR drop before position moves.
Semrush:
➕ Feature tracking + 'you could win this snippet' flagging
➖ AI Overview tracking still patchy
Ahrefs:
➕ Cleaner SERP overview per keyword, snapshot history
➖ Less proactive 'you can win this' guidance
Best for: snippet-stealing workflow → Semrush. Historical SERP context → Ahrefs.
Price-vs-value: worth it only if your niche has heavy snippet/PAA coverage.
Pick this if your CTR dropped without rankings moving. Skip in low-feature niches.
