Sitemap Ping vs GSC Submission: One Is Deprecated, Use The Survivor
The old HTTP ping endpoint (google.com/ping?sitemap=) is retired. Stop relying on it.
Use instead, in priority order:
— 1. Reference the sitemap in robots.txt (Sitemap: https://...). Crawlers read this on their own.
— 2. Submit once in GSC Sitemaps report. This gives you the per-file submitted/indexed counts you need to debug.
— 3. For genuinely time-sensitive single URLs, use the Indexing API (job postings / livestream) or URL Inspection → Request Indexing, sparingly.
What NOT to do:
— Don't re-submit the same sitemap daily in GSC hoping for faster crawl. It changes nothing.
Pass/fail:
— ✅ robots.txt lists every top-level sitemap/index.
— ✅ GSC shows status "Success" with a recent read date.
Definition of done: sitemap is discoverable without manual pings, and GSC confirms it parsed.
