Playbook: build your own ranking-volatility baseline
Third-party 'weather' trackers measure the whole web. Yours should measure your niche. How to roll your own:
— Step 1: Pick 30–50 head terms you rank for and track daily position via the GSC API, not a UI export.
— Step 2: Calculate day-over-day average position delta — that single number is your personal volatility index.
— Step 3: Set a threshold (e.g. >1.5 position swing across the set) that flags 'something's happening.'
— Step 4: Cross-reference spikes against Semrush Sensor and Mozcast to confirm it's web-wide, not just you.
— Step 5: Log every spike with date so you build a private update timeline over months.
This catches unconfirmed updates the trackers smooth over.
One to bookmark: the Semrush Sensor with category filters — compare your niche's score, not the generic one.
