What a Yoast or Rank Math actually gives you: editable title/meta fields, automatic schema, a sitemap, and a green-dot checklist. The first three are genuinely useful plumbing. The fourth is where people lose the plot.

The green-dot score — keyword in first paragraph, keyword density 0.5-2.5%, keyword in subheading — is a 2012 checklist wearing a 2026 logo. Hitting all green has no relationship to ranking. I've seen all-red pages outrank all-green ones in the same SERP, repeatedly.

So the comparison: use the plugin for the plumbing (or a lighter one — the schema and sitemap matter, the analysis bloat doesn't). Ignore the traffic-light entirely. If you're writing for the reader and your title earns the click, the dots will scold you for nothing.
