My classifieds-style site hit 400 pages by month 11. I ran Screaming Frog and it spat out 1,200 'issues' — missing meta descriptions, long titles, thin pages. I spent a full weekend fixing meta descriptions. Rankings: unchanged. Of course — Google writes its own descriptions anyway.

Then I opened GSC's Page Indexing report. It showed 90 pages 'crawled, not indexed' and 40 'duplicate without canonical.' Those were the real problem — a third of my site Google refused to keep. I fixed the canonical issue, requested reindexing, and traffic rose 25% in a month.

Screaming Frog finds everything technically wrong. GSC tells you what Google actually penalizes you for.

Lesson banked: crawlers flag a thousand cosmetic issues; most don't move rankings. Start with GSC's indexing report — it shows the pages Google is actively rejecting, which is where the traffic actually hides.
