The research report no journalist could reach
A B2B brand produced a serious industry report — and locked the whole thing behind a lead-gen form. Reporters who wanted to cover it had to fill out a sales form, get routed to an SDR, and wait. Most just didn't. The report that was supposed to earn press earned only marketing-qualified leads and silence.
The gate served the funnel and starved the PR. A journalist will not hand over their work email to your sales team to fact-check a stat.
We split the asset in two. A fully open, ungated press version — key findings, methodology, charts, downloadable data — lived at a clean URL for media. The gated full report stayed for lead capture, linked from the open page. Reporters got everything; sales kept its funnel.
With the data finally reachable, the report earned 11 placements and became a citable source other writers linked to without asking. The gated version actually got more leads too, because the press coverage drove traffic to it.
Lesson: you can't gate a stat and expect it cited. If a reporter has to talk to your sales team to verify a number, they'll quietly pick a competitor's number instead — open the data, and let the coverage feed the funnel.
