AI-generated variants vs hand-written: which feeds the test
Needed 8 headline variants fast. Asked an LLM for 20, hand-wrote 4. Tested AI's best 4 vs my 4.
What happened: AI variants were grammatically clean but generic, all landed within 1% of each other. Forgettable. My 4 were rougher but one had a weird specific angle that beat everything by 9%.
The tradeoff: AI is unbeatable for QUANTITY and breaking writer's block. But it regresses to the safe, average phrasing, which is exactly what doesn't win tests. Winners are usually specific and a little odd.
My flow now: AI for the first 20 to find directions, then I hand-sharpen the 3 I'll actually test. Volume from the bot, edge from me.
Don't test the bot's polished average. Test the weird specific line. Go write one variant too sharp for an AI to suggest. Report back.
