I copied a big site's strategy and it was the wrong fit for my size

I copied a big site's strategy and it was the wrong fit for my size

Month 7: I studied the category leader obsessively. They ran sprawling 5,000-word 'ultimate guides', went broad across the whole vertical, monetized with their own product. So I mirrored it — wrote giant broad guides, tried to cover everything they covered.

Month 12: I was getting crushed. They had 2,000 referring domains and 8 years of trust; I had 40 links and 12 months. Competing head-on for their broad terms was suicide. My broad guides ranked #20-something for everything and #1 for nothing. Revenue stuck at $400/mo while I burned out chasing a giant.

The turn: I stopped copying and did the opposite. Went painfully narrow — sub-niches the big site found too small to bother with. 'Best [product] for [very specific use case]'. Low volume, low competition, high intent. I could actually win these.

Month 18: forty tiny pages the giant ignored, each ranking #1-3, totaling $1,600/mo. I won by being too small to be worth their attention.

The takeaway: studying a market leader is smart; copying their playbook is not. Their strategy is built for their authority, age, and budget — none of which you have yet. A new site beats an old giant by going where the giant won't bend down to reach. Find the keywords too small for them and too profitable to ignore.
