You publish a 2026 guide, but 40 old posts still link to the 2021 version you meant to retire, splitting authority across two competing URLs. Now you've cannibalized yourself, and Google has to guess which one is canonical.
The fix: when you supersede a page, run a search for every internal link pointing at the old URL and redirect them to the new one — both the 301 and the actual anchors in your body content.
