Ch. 14: Contextual internal links vs sidebar widgets
My baby-gear site, month 10. I had 'related posts' sidebar widgets and a 'popular posts' block — felt like good internal linking. Rankings on my money pages weren't moving.
I ran an experiment: I stripped the auto-widgets from 20 posts and instead added 3-4 hand-placed contextual links inside the body, anchored with real descriptive phrases, pointing up to my 'best convertible car seats' money page. Eight weeks later that page moved from position 9 to 4. Sitewide, the money page's internal-link equity finally concentrated instead of leaking into 'popular' noise.
Sidebar links are sitewide and low-signal — Google largely discounts boilerplate. In-content links with intent-matched anchors carry real weight.
Lesson banked: automated sidebar/related widgets spread link equity like a fine mist. Three hand-placed in-content links to one money page beat fifty boilerplate ones.
