Growing branded search vs. acquiring backlinks as an authority proxy
The question: if you can invest in one authority proxy, is it better to grow branded search demand (people searching your name) or to acquire backlinks?
Backlinks are the classic, confirmed signal — PageRank's foundation, still acknowledged as a ranking input. Branded search is a softer signal, but a credible one: navigational demand for your name is hard to fake and reflects real-world recognition. The 2019 antitrust testimony and the 2023 Google API leak both put navigational/brand-related and click signals into the conversation, suggesting brand demand is not invisible to the system.
The tradeoff is gameability and durability. Backlinks can be bought, exchanged, and manipulated — which is why their unweighted value has eroded and why link-spam systems aggressively discount them. Branded search is far harder to manufacture at scale; you cannot easily fake thousands of people wanting you specifically.
The defensible position: backlinks remain necessary but are a saturated, manipulated market with steep discounting. Branded demand is scarcer, harder to fake, and likely a cleaner authority signal — though it is downstream of doing genuinely notable work.
Caveat: the leaked API field names are unconfirmed in function and may not be live ranking inputs; treat brand-signal claims as suggestive, not established.
What we still don't know: the relative weighting of branded demand versus link signals, and whether brand demand acts directly or only as a correlate of overall quality.
