The Slack channel everyone muted
It was a Friday when a retail brand discovered its #social-alerts channel had been muted by all nine people in it. Every mention, good or bad, fired the same ping. The signal-to-noise ratio had trained the whole team to ignore it, right before a viral complaint went 40,000 views unseen for nine hours.
They rebuilt around tiered routing. Low-priority mentions went to a daily digest, mid-tier to a reviewed queue, and only true red flags, a verified account plus negative sentiment plus rising velocity, pinged a human directly. Direct alerts dropped from roughly 300 a week to 11.
Within a month, median response time to genuine crises fell from 9 hours to 35 minutes.
The takeaway: one alert channel for everything is the same as no alert channel. Route by severity, or your team will solve the noise by ignoring the signal too.
