I refused display ads for a year and left $14k on the table
Month 6: 'ads make sites look cheap,' I decided. Pure affiliate, clean design, snobby about it. Site at 20k visits/month, $1,100 from affiliate.
The blind spot: a huge chunk of my traffic was informational — 'how often to water X', 'why do leaves turn yellow' — readers who'd never buy anything through my links. I was monetizing maybe 15% of my visitors and showing the other 85% nothing.
The turn, month 18: I finally tried a premium ad network on informational pages only, kept buyer-intent pages ad-light to protect conversions. RPM came in around $18. That non-buying 85% of traffic suddenly produced $1,300/mo on its own, on top of unchanged affiliate income.
Doing the math on the year I'd refused ads out of pride: roughly $14,000 of revenue I'd simply declined to collect.
The takeaway: affiliate links only monetize buyers. On most niche sites the majority of traffic is informational and worth nothing to your affiliate links — but plenty to an ad network. The clean-design purity tax is real money. Ads on informational pages, affiliate focus on commercial pages. Stop choosing one when the smart move is both.
