Ch. 23: Handwritten reviews vs programmatic pages

Ch. 23: Handwritten reviews vs programmatic pages

My SaaS-comparison site, 2024. I was tempted by programmatic SEO — generate 500 'X vs Y' pages from a database, one template, instant scale. I built 80 as a test. They indexed, then 60 got deindexed within two months as thin/duplicate. Net traffic from the survivors: ~400 sessions/mo.

Meanwhile 12 handwritten comparison posts — actual screenshots, real pricing I'd checked, one quirk I'd hit using each tool — pulled 3,100 sessions/mo and converted 4x better. The programmatic pages had no reason to be trusted or cited.

Programmatic works when each page has genuinely unique data — flight routes, local listings. For opinion-driven comparisons, it's index bloat.

Lesson banked: programmatic SEO needs unique data per page to survive. If the only thing changing is two product names in a template, you're building deindexing fuel, not traffic.
