The conversion tag that broke for three silent weeks
A B2B site ran every tracking pixel through a tag manager for flexibility. One deploy reordered the data layer, and the lead-conversion tag stopped firing. Nobody noticed for 21 days.
A tag manager decouples tracking from code, which is fast to change and easy to break, because it depends on a page structure it doesn't control. The clue: conversions flatlined to zero on a single tag while traffic held steady, a too-clean line.
The change: we hard-coded the one revenue-critical event directly into the template and left the experimental tags in the manager.
Three weeks of lost data couldn't be recovered, but going forward the critical tag's reliability went from intermittent to 100%, verified by a daily fire-count alert.
Tag managers are right for fast, low-stakes tracking. Hard-code the events you'd cry over losing. Convenience and reliability pull in opposite directions, so split your tags by how much each one hurts to lose.
