Indexing every facet combo buries your money pages
In 151 catalog sites, the median ratio of indexed thin-facet URLs to core product/category URLs was 18:1. Bloat dilutes crawl and quality signals site-wide.
— Sites with facet bloat: 47.0% ▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░
— Median thin:core index ratio: 18:1
— p90: 64:1
— Core-page crawl frequency: ↓ 4x vs. clean sites
The error: leaving color+size+brand+price facet combinations indexable. Each is near-duplicate, low-demand, and competes with the real category.
Fix: index a curated allowlist of high-demand facets; noindex the rest and remove their internal links so crawl never reaches them. Drive the rule from search-demand data, not 'index everything.' Cohort cut the ratio to 3:1 and core-page crawl frequency rose ↑ 3.6x.
So what: index bloat is a tax every page in your index pays.
