Ch. 7: Amazon Associates vs direct brand affiliate
My outdoor-tech site, 2023. Amazon paid 3% and a 24-hour cookie — convenient, everything's there, but a $300 GPS watch earned me $9. I leaned on it because it 'just worked.'
Month 14 I emailed three brands directly. One ran a program at 8% with a 30-day cookie. Same GPS watch: $24 a sale, and the longer cookie caught buyers who returned a week later. My conversion volume dropped a little — people trust Amazon's checkout — but per-sale earnings tripled. Net revenue on those product lines rose 60%.
The catch: direct programs mean separate logins, separate payouts, and one brand killed its program with two weeks' notice. Amazon never disappears on you.
Lesson banked: Amazon is the reliable floor — low rates, total coverage. Direct programs pay 2-3x but demand management and carry shut-down risk. Use Amazon as backup, not the foundation, on high-ticket items.
