I almost quit in month 4, three weeks before it took off

Month 1-3: built a houseplant care site, 35 articles, did everything 'right'. Traffic by month 3: 280 visits. Revenue: $0. I was ready to call it a failure and chase the next shiny idea.

Month 4: I'd half-decided to quit. Logged into analytics one last time to 'confirm it was dead' — and the graph had a hook at the end. 280 became 900 in two weeks, then 2,400. The classic new-site pattern: months of nothing, then the sandbox releases its grip all at once.

The setback was almost a self-inflicted one. I nearly killed a winner three weeks before its hockey-stick because I expected linear growth and got a flat line followed by a cliff edge upward.

Month 9: 14k visits, $1,200/mo. The same site I'd mentally buried.

The takeaway: new content sites don't grow in a straight line — they crawl for months while Google evaluates trust, then jump. The graveyard of niche sites is full of ones abandoned at month 4 by people who mistook the normal flat patch for failure. If your content is genuinely good, the flat line isn't the verdict. It's the setup. Give it nine months before you call it.
