Running IndexNow but never claiming the site in Bing
IndexNow works without a Bing Webmaster account — which is exactly why people skip verification and then fly blind. You ping URLs, get 200s, and have no way to see what Bing actually did with them. The submissions might be fine or silently rejected; you can't tell.
What IndexNow does well:
— Push notifications to Bing/Yandex the instant content changes
— Shared protocol — one ping reaches multiple engines
Where it falls short blind:
— No feedback loop without Bing Webmaster Tools
— Easy to over-submit unchanged URLs and look spammy
The fix: verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools even though IndexNow doesn't require it. The portal shows IndexNow submitted vs. indexed counts, surfaces key-file errors, and lets you compare against bingbot's organic crawl. Submit only genuinely new/changed URLs — don't fire on every page load.
Best for: getting real signal from your IndexNow setup.
Not for: anyone happy flying blind on a 200 response.
