Contrarian hook vs confirming hook
A nutrition creator made safe, agreeable videos. The opener: "Eating more protein helps you build muscle." Three-second retention: 42%. True, but agreeing with what people already believe gives them no reason to watch.
And then we picked a fight with the consensus: "You're eating too much protein, and it's why you're not losing fat." Same science underneath, opposite framing. Retention hit 69% and the comments tripled.
The result over ten videos: contrarian openers beat confirming ones by roughly 22 points, but they also drew the hate-watchers and bad-faith arguers. Higher retention, messier comment section.
Here's the line I learned not to cross: be contrarian about the framing, never about the facts. Lie about the science and the takedown video erases your channel.
The lesson: challenge the belief, not the truth. A defensible contrarian hook is the cheapest retention you'll ever buy.
