Geo Pulse #60 — Geo-redirects that get you deindexed
Theme: the SEO-vs-GEO collision nobody plans for.
→ Hard-redirecting by IP on first visit. Auto-bouncing a user (or Googlebot) to a country page breaks crawling and can read as cloaking. Fix: suggest the local version with a banner, don't force-redirect.
→ Googlebot crawls from the US. If you IP-redirect, Google only ever sees your US page and your other-GEO pages go unindexed. Your localized SEO investment vanishes.
→ Use hreflang, not redirects. hreflang tells search engines which URL serves which language/region without hijacking the user.
→ The pattern that's safe. Serve the requested URL, offer a dismissible 'go to your region' banner, remember the choice in a cookie. Source: Google Search Central docs on locale-adaptive pages and faulty redirects.
