Outstream video unit vs a 300x250 display in the same slot
What it does — both fill an in-content slot. Outstream plays a video ad that expands on scroll; the 300x250 is standard display.
Setup effort (1-5) — Outstream: 3 (player config, collapse-when-empty, sound policy). Display: 1.
RPM lift seen — Outstream eCPMs run 3-5x display, so even at lower fill the slot earns +30-60% when video demand is present. When unfilled, it must collapse cleanly or it's worse than display.
Pros / Cons —
Outstream: premium video eCPM in a display slot, but autoplay-with-sound is a policy/UX minefield and unfilled video looks broken.
Display: reliable fill, no UX drama, but caps out at display rates.
Verdict — Run outstream muted, collapse-on-no-fill, with a display fallback in the same tag. The video-or-display waterfall beats either alone. Skip outstream if you can't guarantee muted autoplay.
Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★★☆☆
Best for: content with high mid-page dwell. Skip on finance/medical where video demand is thin.
