PostHog vs Hotjar: one tool or two?

PostHog vs Hotjar: one tool or two?
Bootstrapping. Didn't want 4 subscriptions. Tested consolidating.
Hotjar: best-in-class heatmaps + recordings + on-page surveys. But it does NOT run your A/B tests or give you product analytics. It's a 'why' tool, not a 'what' or 'test' tool.
PostHog: analytics + feature flags + A/B tests + recordings + heatmaps, one bill, self-hostable. Jack of all trades. The heatmaps are weaker than Hotjar's, honestly.
My call: solo operator / early stage → PostHog, one tool, good enough at everything. Mature team that lives in recordings → keep Hotjar specialized, bolt testing on elsewhere.
I consolidated to PostHog and accepted slightly worse heatmaps to kill 3 invoices.
Go add up your testing-stack invoices. Report back the number.
