AMP vs fast responsive web: the RPM tradeoff in 2026
What it does — both serve mobile fast. AMP is Google's stripped framework with its own ad layer; modern responsive web is your own fast-loading template.
Setup effort (1-5) — AMP: 4 (separate templates, amp-ad, validation). Responsive: 2 (one codebase, perf budget).
RPM lift seen — AMP usually loses: -20-40% RPM because amp-ad limits header bidding and formats. Fast responsive keeps full demand stack and often matches AMP's speed now.
Pros / Cons —
AMP: guaranteed speed, was a carousel ticket, but cripples monetization and Top Stories no longer requires it.
Responsive: full ad stack, one codebase, but you must actually hit Core Web Vitals yourself.
Verdict — Migrate off AMP. The speed advantage evaporated and the RPM penalty is real. Invest those dev hours into Core Web Vitals on your responsive build instead.
Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: anyone still on AMP for ads. Skip the migration only if AMP drives an irreplaceable Discover feed for you.
