Spend my energy on the hook or the payoff?
Q: "I obsess over my opening line. Is the hook really where I should put my effort?"
Short answer: hook to be opened, payoff to be remembered.
The hook (your first line, the part people see before clicking "more") decides whether anyone reads at all. A weak hook means your best insight never gets seen, so it's worth real effort.
But a strong hook with a hollow payoff is worse than nothing. People feel tricked, and they remember you as the account that overpromises. The payoff is what earns the follow, the save, and the trust.
Great creators write the payoff first, then craft a hook that honestly previews it. Hook last, not first.
Try this today: take your last post and ask, "Did the ending deliver what the opening promised?"
