Testing copy vs testing design: which tool, which order
New hero to optimize. Both copy and layout felt weak. Where to spend the test budget?
Copy tests are cheap to run and high-leverage: I swap a headline in the visual editor, no dev, ship in 20 min. Design tests need Figma, a dev, a build.
So I always test copy FIRST. Cheaper, faster, and copy usually moves the needle harder than a font tweak anyway.
The tool split:
— Copy variants → visual editor (VWO/Convert), launch solo.
— Layout/component variants → feature flag + dev, slower lane.
Last quarter: 9 copy tests, 2 design tests. The copy tests drove 80% of my total lift. Design is the long pole.
