You're replicating your competitor's worst links
Spotted a classic this week: a team ran a link-intersect, exported every domain linking to three rivals, and started outreach to all of it. Problem — a third of that list was the rivals' spam, scraper sites, and abandoned directories they'd love you to copy.
The mistake is treating a competitor's full backlink export as a to-do list.
What the operators who win gap analysis actually do —
— Filter the intersect to domains linking to two-plus competitors AND sending real traffic. That's a vertical's true link economy.
— Sort by the donor's own organic trend. You want their healthy links, not the debris they can't get removed.
Multiple wasted outreach campaigns trace back to one skipped filter. Connect the dots: their gap is signal; their junk is noise. Watch this space.
