Ch. 2: One niche site vs a portfolio of five
In 2022 I had two paths: pour everything into one outdoor-cooking site, or spin up five micro-sites across random niches to 'spread risk.' I chose the five. By month 9 I had five DR 5 sites each making $20-60/mo. Spread thin, none had momentum.
Month 10 I killed four and merged the best content into the one outdoor-cooking site. Within 4 months that single site passed what all five made combined — $740/mo — because topical authority compounds and I could finally afford real links to one domain.
The diversification logic is sound for an established operator with cash flow. For your first site, it's a momentum killer.
Lesson banked: portfolios protect income you already have. They sabotage income you're still trying to start. Concentrate first, diversify after your first $2k month.
