Category description: top of page or below the products?
'Q: Where do I put my category SEO text — above the grid or under it?'
Short answer: A short intro (2-3 sentences) above the grid, the longer SEO copy below it. Never a giant wall of text pushing products down.
The longer version: Two competing needs: Google wants topical context, users want products instantly. A massive top-of-page paragraph satisfies Google but hurts conversions and engagement signals — which also hurt rankings. The split solves both.
Up top: one tight, keyword-relevant sentence or two that frames the category. Below the grid: the deeper buying guide, FAQ, and supporting copy for both Google and the rare user who scrolls. Google reads the whole DOM, so position-below still counts; it just doesn't block the shopping experience.
Example: /running-shoes — top: 'Shop men's running shoes for road and trail, from lightweight racers to cushioned daily trainers.' Bottom: 400 words on choosing by gait, surface, and distance.
Rule of thumb: Tiny context above, the heavy copy below the fold.
