The hero carousel is where conversions go to die, and stakeholders love it because it ends the fight over which message goes first — just rotate all five.
The truth: auto-advancing carousels get clicked on the first slide and nowhere else. Notre Dame's old test put slide-one clicks near 90% of all carousel clicks; everything after slide one is a rounding error. You built a five-room museum where everyone sees the lobby.
Stacked sections beat carousels because the visitor controls the pace and every message gets a guaranteed impression as they scroll.
When a carousel is defensible: a gallery the user actively swipes — product photos, screenshots — where browsing is the task.
The nuance: a carousel isn't a content tool, it's a political tool for avoiding a prioritization decision. Make the decision instead.
