The hook that overpromises
Everyone says: "Open with a shocking hook — 'I got fired and it was the best thing ever' — to stop the scroll."
The claim: a dramatic first line buys you the click-to-expand, and the rest doesn't matter as much.
What's actually true: the hook gets the expand, then a body that doesn't pay it off gets the instant collapse — and that fast bounce is the exact signal that buries the post. The mistake is engineering the hook and phoning in the proof. Tested fix: write the hook LAST, derived from the single strongest fact in your body. If the most interesting thing you have is mild, your hook should be mild. A matched hook keeps people reading; a bait hook gets clicks that immediately become dismissals.
It's not a weak hook. It's a strong hook attached to nothing.
