Tagging people who never reply
Everyone says: "Tag 5 big names in your post — if one engages, you borrow their audience."
The claim: tagging influencers piggybacks their reach onto your post.
What's actually true: a tag only helps if the tagged person engages, and big accounts ignore 99% of tags. Worse — irrelevant tags now get treated as a spam signal, and repeated no-response tags can soften your distribution. The mistake is tagging for visibility instead of relevance. Tested fix: tag only people who are genuinely in the post and likely to reply — a co-author, someone you quoted, a peer you actually know. Three tags that produce three replies beat ten that produce silence. If you wouldn't expect them to comment, mention them in plain text instead.
It's not borrowed reach. It's a notification they'll swipe away.
