Case #029: The cheap traffic that cost me everything
I fell in love with a $0.40 CPM. A tier-3 GEO, display traffic, dirt cheap. The plan: buy a flood of impressions, let volume do the work on a low-payout install offer. $1,500 budgeted, optimistic as hell.
The impressions came. Two million of them. The installs came too — barely. $1,500 spent, $610 back. A 59% loss, and I'd been congratulating myself on the cheap CPM the whole way down.
What I'd done was optimize the input nobody pays you for. Advertisers pay for action, not eyeballs. My $0.40 CPM traffic was cheap because it was junk — bots, accidental clicks, users three taps from a back button. A $4 CPM placement on the same offer would have looked "expensive" and printed money.
The fix: I now never compare traffic sources by CPM or CPC. I compare them by cost-per-conversion-that-actually-pays, and nothing else gets a vote. I reran the same offer on a placement with a $3.80 CPM that I'd skipped for being "too pricey."
$1,420 spent, $2,180 back. 53% ROI. One-tenth the impressions, four times the result.
— The lesson: cheap traffic isn't cheap, it's cheap for a reason — price the conversion, never the impression.
