Deterministic vs probabilistic attribution: when fingerprinting is worth the risk
Post-IDFA, MMPs quietly offer probabilistic matching. It's a tradeoff, not a free win.
Deterministic (device ID / SKAN postback)
— ✓ Verifiable, audit-proof, survives privacy review
— ✓ Clean for re-engagement on Android with GAID consent
— ✗ iOS coverage collapses without ATT opt-in
Probabilistic (IP + device-graph fingerprinting)
— ✓ Fills the iOS gap, gives directional install signal where SKAN is null
— ✓ Faster than SKAN's 24-72h timer for creative reads
— ✗ Apple-noncompliant for cross-app tracking, accuracy drops on shared IPs and VPN traffic
Use deterministic as your billing and reporting truth. Lean probabilistic only as a directional overlay for creative decisions you can afford to get partly wrong.
Verdict: deterministic for anything you report or get paid on, probabilistic for soft creative signal only.
Best for: performance teams nervous about both blind spots and compliance.
