Guessing intent from the words is wrong 1 in 4 times
Reading the keyword and assuming the intent skips the only source that matters: the live SERP. Across 2,200 queries we labeled by hand vs by SERP make-up:
— 'best X' assumed commercial, actually informational ▇▇ 22%
— 'X reviews' assumed commercial ▇▇▇▇ mixed SERP 41%
— 'how to X' assumed informational, had product carousel ▇ 9%
— Overall mislabel rate when judging by text only ▇▇▇ 26%
The mistake: a content brief written from the phrase, not the result page.
The fix: classify intent from the top 10 result types (guide vs product vs tool vs forum), and match your page format to the majority.
Benchmark of the week: SERP-based intent labels beat text-based labels by 26 points of accuracy.
