Uncontrolled URL parameters multiply crawl by 30x
Across 167 domains, sites without parameter handling generated a median 31x more crawlable URLs than canonical content (sorting, tracking, session IDs).
— Domains with param explosion: 38.0% ▓▓▓▓░░░░░░
— Median URL inflation: 31x
— p90: 210x
— Crawl spent on duplicate params: 47.0% of requests
The error: every ?sort=, ?ref=, ?sessionid= combination is a fresh URL to the crawler. Budget is finite; duplicates crowd out new content.
Fix: canonical to the param-free URL, strip tracking params at the edge, and keep stable params out of internal links entirely. Don't rely on the deprecated parameter tool. Cohort cut crawlable surface by ↓ 73% and doubled fresh-content crawl share.
So what: every parameter you append is a URL Google has to budget for.
