5,000 mentions that reached nobody
It was a Monday when a fintech challenger's mention count spiked 5,000 in a day. The growth lead screamed virality. The analyst pulled a second metric, potential reach, and the story collapsed: 4,100 of those mentions came from accounts under 200 followers, mostly bots recycling a referral link.
Weighted by reach, the real spike was closer to 600 meaningful impressions. The "viral moment" had a true audience smaller than one mid-tier creator's single post.
The next campaign, they tracked both side by side. Mention volume rose only 12%, but reach-weighted exposure climbed 230% because three journalists picked it up. The flat volume number would have called it a flop.
The takeaway: volume counts mouths, reach counts ears. When you only have one number on the slide, make it the weighted one, or you'll celebrate noise and bury the signal.
