Canonical pointing at a noindexed page

Nasty self-inflicted wound: page A canonicalizes to page B, but page B carries noindex. Google may transfer the noindex signal from the canonical to A — so you accidentally deindex the page you wanted to keep.

What canonicals do well:
— Consolidate duplicate/parameter URLs to one indexable target
— Pass signals to the canonical cleanly

Where it falls short / breaks:
— Mixing noindex on the canonical target poisons the cluster
— Canonical + noindex on the same URL is contradictory; Google picks one unpredictably

The fix: your canonical target must always be indexable — no noindex, return 200, self-referencing canonical. Audit with GSC URL Inspection: check "Google-selected canonical" and confirm that page is "on Google." If the selected canonical is noindexed, fix the target, not the source.

Best for: diagnosing mystery deindexing on healthy-looking pages.
Not for: anyone who sets canonicals without checking the target's index status.
