Smartlinks lose ~12-18% of EPC versus a matched direct offer — and that's the good case

A smartlink (one URL that auto-routes traffic to whichever offer the network thinks fits) optimizes for the network's blended yield, not yours. EPC (earnings per click) on a smartlink across mixed Tier-2/3 betting traffic typically lands 12-18% below a hand-picked direct offer on the same traffic — because the routing skims a margin and defaults to whatever fills inventory.

When smartlinks still win:
— Traffic with messy or unknown GEO mix where you can't pre-match an offer.
— Volume too low to negotiate a direct deal (under ~$2-3k/month you have no leverage).
— Leftover/remnant traffic after you've already creamed the top GEOs into direct deals.

When direct wins, decisively:
— Concentrated GEO. One country at real volume always beats a router.
— Known vertical intent (casino vs sportsbook traffic behaves differently; a smartlink blends them and dilutes both).

The practical play: run smartlink as your fallback layer, direct offers as your primary. Route your top 3 GEOs by impression direct, dump the long tail into the smartlink.

Benchmark of the day: a smartlink is worth its 12-18% EPC tax only on traffic you can't segment — segment first, route the remainder.
