Failure mode: the orphaned host page
Worth grouping these, because they all describe the same quiet money-loser.
— A Black Hat World thread: an edit placed on an article that ranks for nothing and has no internal links pointing to it. Dead page, dead link.
— A blog comment circulating elsewhere notes these pages often aren't even in Google's index anymore, so the link is never crawled in context.
— A second thread shows the fix: ask the seller for the host URL upfront, run it through a site explorer, and reject anything with zero ranking keywords or zero internal links.
Editor's note: a contextual link only passes value if the page itself is alive in the index and gets crawled. Orphaned pages fail silently — you'll never see a deindex notice, just no movement.
Pick of the week: the BHW reply with the three-line checklist for spotting orphan pages before purchase.
