I chased a 40k-volume keyword and made nothing

Month 2: I found 'how to clean a coffee maker' — 40,000 searches a month. I thought I'd struck gold. Wrote a 2,500-word monster, built three links to it, waited.

Month 5: it ranked #3. Traffic: 9,000 visits that month. Affiliate revenue from it: $4. Four dollars. Nobody cleaning a coffee maker wants to buy a coffee maker.

Meanwhile a throwaway 800-word post — 'best coffee maker under $100', volume only 1,300 — was doing $380/mo at position #6.

The turn was realizing I'd been buying lottery tickets on traffic and ignoring why people search. Informational queries feed your ego. Commercial-intent queries feed your bank account.

I rebuilt my keyword list. Cut anything that started with 'how to' or 'why does'. Kept 'best', 'vs', 'review', 'under $X'. Volume dropped 80%, revenue 6x'd in four months.

The takeaway: a 1,000-search keyword where the searcher is reaching for a wallet beats a 40,000-search keyword where they're reaching for a paper towel. Map intent before volume, always.
